In the northeast of Barsaive, the Scytha Mountains were home to the first dwarf kingdom in the area, predating Throal. The Scythan kingdom survived the Orichalcum Wars, but declined after the initial arrival of Theran Empire. Scytha was one of the first places to be beset by Horrors, a century before the Scourge. Combined with a mysterious wasting disease that claimed many dwarf children, this drove most Scythan dwarfs to flee to Throal and other places (including Marrek) before the Scourge.

After the Scourge, the Scytha Mountains are reported to be mostly abandoned by Namegivers. Adventurers and expeditions searching for the wealth of Scytha report many strange creatures of varying description, and popular wisdom holds that the mountains are haunted by the vengeful spirits of the founders of the Scythan Kingdom.

The Scytha Mountains are home to the Great Dragon Vasdenjas, who has been known to give audiences on Mount Wyrmspire.
