A Kaer is a shelter built to hide against the Horrors during the Scourge . It was usually built underground and allowed hundreds of Name-Givers to survive for many years when the Horrors ravaged the lands of Barsaive.

As Barsaive was Theran controlled at the beginning of the scourge, most Kaers were warded with powerful Theran magicks that prevented Horror’s from breaching them; Even after centuries of assault. This was not always enough however, and many Kaer’s were breached either physically or Astrally; And their occupants subject to a most disturbing and horrifying demise.
